We want anyone to be able to read this site, order from it and find us, whatever they are using to do it. This page says what we have done, what we know is not good enough yet, and how to tell us when we have got something wrong.

What we aim for

We build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at level AA. We have not had the site independently audited, so this is a statement of how it is built and what we test, not a certificate.

What we have done

  • Contrast. Every colour on the site is defined in one place and the contrast of each piece of text against the background it sits on is checked automatically when the site is built. Body text clears 4.5:1; focus rings and borders clear 3:1. The focus ring changes colour between our dark and cream sections for that reason.
  • Keyboard. Everything can be reached and operated with a keyboard, every focused element is visibly outlined, and the navigation drawer traps focus while it is open and hands it back to the button that opened it.
  • Links that leave the site. Order Now and Book a Table open a new tab. Each one says so in its accessible name, so a screen reader announces it before the click rather than after, and each name starts with the words you can see on the control.
  • Text, not pictures of text. Every dish, description and price on the menu is real text on the page. Nothing important is locked inside an image or a PDF.
  • Photographs. Every photograph carries a description. None of them is captioned “image”.
  • Motion. The video on the homepage does not play if your device is set to reduce motion, and neither does smooth scrolling.
  • Without JavaScript. Almost all of the site is plain HTML. The menus, the whole of this page, the story, the gallery and our address all work with JavaScript turned off.
  • Zoom and reflow. Pages reflow to a single column and stay usable at 400% zoom without sideways scrolling.

What we know is not good enough

The map. The Google Map embedded on our find us page and at the bottom of the homepage is slow to start up on a phone. It can stop the page responding to taps for a couple of seconds while it loads. That is a real problem, and we are still working out how to fix it properly. In the meantime, the address and the directions link beside the map are plain text and a plain link, and both work immediately.

The map is somebody else’s embed, so how it behaves for a screen reader is not something we control.

Ordering and booking. Order Now and Book a Table take you to a separate service on order.theshish.co.uk. We did not build it and we cannot fix it. If you have trouble ordering or booking there, ring us on 01403 257777. We are happy to take the whole thing over the phone.

Telling us about a problem

If any part of this site is hard to use, ring 01403 257777 and say so. Tell us which page and what happened, and what you were using if you know. Whether it was a screen reader, a keyboard or a phone makes a difference. We will fix what we can and tell you honestly if something will take a while.

If you are not happy with how we respond, the Equality Advisory and Support Service can advise you: equalityadvisoryservice.com.

In the restaurant

This statement is about the website. For anything about the building itself — getting in, where to sit, the space between tables — ring us on 01403 257777 and ask before you come. It is better to know before you set off than when you get to the door.
